The Midpoint win: the Protagonist got the right prize, by the wrong method, with the Habit still running — and the second half is the reckoning.

Definition
The defining characteristic of the Midpoint. The Protagonist wins the McGuffin — and feels like they have succeeded — but they won it the wrong way: using their Bad Habit, concealed by the Genie, rather than by shedding the Habit. The audience can feel that the victory is hollow, even if the Protagonist cannot.
A False Victory is not a fake victory. The McGuffin was real. The win was real. The problem is the method. The Habit is still there. The Genie is still running. The foundation the victory was built on is unstable — and the second half of the story is what happens when that foundation is tested.
Why This Term Matters
The False Victory is what gives the second half of the story its purpose. Without a properly constructed False Victory, the Midpoint is either the ending (if it is too satisfying) or a minor setback (if it is not satisfying enough). The False Victory must feel like enough of a win that the Protagonist and the audience both allow themselves to believe it — and then the second half must dismantle it.
The False Victory also makes the final victory meaningful. If the Protagonist had shed their Habit to win the McGuffin, there would be nothing left for the ending to accomplish. The Habit must still be intact at the Midpoint so that shedding it in Sequence DD is the climactic act it needs to be.
The 80/20 Standard
The False Victory should feel 80% satisfying. That 20% is not a flaw in the storytelling — it is the structural gap the second half fills. The audience should feel it and not quite know what to call it.
If the Midpoint feels 100% satisfying, the Habit has already been shed and this is actually the ending. Rebuild it.
If the Midpoint feels less than 70% satisfying, the McGuffin was not worth enough. Raise the stakes.
In a Kind Comedy — Examples
Ratatouille: Gusteau's is saved. The great review arrives. Linguini is a star chef. The restaurant is full. This is a genuine win — 80% satisfying. The 20%: Remy is still in the hat. Linguini does not know his own success is a lie. The Habit of hiding is fully intact. Everything that follows flows from that 20%.
In Bruges: Harry's phone call — stay in Bruges, the heat will pass. Ray feels a temporary reprieve. 80% satisfied: maybe he will be okay. The 20%: his guilt is unresolved, Harry's code is unchanged, and the real reckoning has not arrived yet.
